With spring rolling around, that means spring sports will be starting! Spring sports coaches and athletes hope for the snow to melt so they can get outside as soon as possible.
Boys and girls track and field is looking to a great season coming up. For boys, the coaches include Head Coach Nathan Johnson, Glen Gilderman, Tanner Hall, Matt Knight, Owen Brenna, Annika Voss, Sami Argir, and Dean Dahlvang.
The boys 4x4 team is looking really strong, along with the 4x8 team. Cameron Pease said that this year, a lot of athletes have potential for going to state.
Boys had around 55 athletes in the 2022 season, and hope for around that or even more this year. Boys start their season off right away on April 1st at an indoor meet in Mankato.
Girls are also looking strong this year according to head coach James Savre who said, “With a lot of talent, new faces and excitement, it should be a great year!”
Savre is assisted by Gilderman, Hall, Knight, Brenna, Dahlvang (doing Hurdles), along with Jen Harnell.
Girls are looking to have great 4x2, and 4x8 returning relays. With a lot of runners coming back, and new ones this year, girls track should look to great future races! Girls had nearly 40-50 athletes last year, and also hope for even more this coming year
Girls started their season off on March 13th with practices starting indoors. They will have their first invite meet in Pine City on Thursday April 6th.
Local meets for the teams include Duluth East, Duluth Denfeld, and Cloquet. Like mentioned earlier, the team’s hope is that with the six plus feet of snow on the track that it will melt fast so teams can go out and get ready for their first, right around the corner meets.
Before then, the two teams will continue to practice indoors and run on the roads, so they can be ready right away. This year looks great for boys and girls track and field and we wish to see some faces at state to represent our school, on June 7-10, 2023 in St. Michael Albertville!
