Spike Award Winners

The Spike Award is given out after every meet with the winners determined by the Coaching Staff.  To win the Spike Award the athlete may PR or be recognized for a strong performance or something else that is note worthy at the meet.

2023 Spike Award Winners

Isaac Sushoreba

Last Chance Meet (5/22/23) - Isaac ran two really good races in the 800 and 4x400. He took a risk and it paid off.

Jackson Olson

Last Chance Meet (5/22/23) - Jackson has been running really well and has dropped his mile time quite a bit in last couple of meets. After coming off an injury he is see a lot of success

Luke Smith

Terry Nutter Memorial Meet (5/20/23) - Luke was running a great 300h and then he hit a hurdle and had to stop. He dusted himself off and finished the race. Luke showed what grit is.

Gabe Backe and Noah Deluca

Lake Superior Conference (5/16/23) - Both Gabe and Noah had HUGE PR's at the LSC meet. They didn't place in the meet, didn't score any points, but their hard work was on display as the both PR'ed by 10 seconds or more. Their hard work is a great example of how working hard pays off and the rewards that coming for this hard work.

Toby Schunk

Matt Kero Meet (5/12/23) - Toby has been quietly working extremely hard and it is starting to show. He ran a great 4x800 leg at his splits have been getting faster in almost every meet. All his hard work is paying off.

Josh Monreal

Matt Kero Meet (5/12/23) - Josh has been battling back from an injury, he has stayed the course and had a big meet in the throws. He has also been an important leader this year in the throws group.

Luke Smith

Superior Quad (5/2/23) - Luke had to run his 300h all by himself. He went out and ran a great race and also PR'ed.

Santiago Lenz

Pine City (4/28/23) -Santi ran a great 800 event though he was almost taken down at the start of the race. He also had his shoe blown out at the previous meet and in both cases just kept competing.

Aiden Gallagher

Pine City (4/28/23) - Aiden was all over the place cheering for his team mates and also ran a great 3200.

Cam Pease/Cody Evers

Denfeld Quad (4/25/23) - Cam and Cody both either PR'ed or almost PR'ed in the first meet of the year. They have been pushing each other and supportive of each other at the same time. They have been great examples of the core values of Respect, Integrity and Hard Work.

The 2023 Team

Denfeld Quad (4/25/23) - This is a first. The entire team gets a Spike for how hard they have been working. Given the really touch weather that we have been experiencing this spring, the team has stayed focused the whole time. In the first meet, the entire team went out and competed and had an awesome first meet.

2022 Spike Award Winners

Zach Schnabel

Terry Nutter Classic (5/21/22)- Zach has been injured all year and this meet was his first back. He ran great. Zach has been putting the work and being totally dedicated to getting back in time for Sections to help out the team.

Alex Ruth

Terry Nutter Classic (5/21/22) - Alex had a big PR in the 800 and has been working hard to get better. He is starting to figure out racing and he a great asset to the team because of his hard work.

Gavin Tabbert

LSC (5/17/22) - Gavin placed and PRed in the open 400 and then was willing to run in the 4x400 when we needed him. He ran an amazing second leg and showed a tremendous amount of courage.

Hendrick Hicks

Kero Invite (5/13/22) - Hendrick ran a great mile and PRed. He has been working hard at practice and it shows.

Isaac Sushoreba

Kero Invite (5/13/22) - Isaac went out and competed and ran a great 800 and then turned around and ran a great leg of the 4x400. His work ethic is paying off.

Mason Archibald

Kero Invite (5/13/22) - Mason PRed by 11 seconds in the 800 and has been doing a great job at practice every day.

Zak McPhee

Cloquet Relays (5/6/22) - Zak has been doing a fantastic job of leading the team on and off the field. He works hard every day. He is a leader for the team and leads with integrity.

Elijah Wozniak

Cloquet Relays (5/6/22) - Elijah is always willing to help out the team in anyway that he can. He is having a great year not only on the track but as a quiet leader as well.

Josh Knight

Hermantown Quad - (5/3/22) - Josh opened the meet with a solid 4x800 leg, then proceeded to run an unreal 3200, by himself, and then quickly turned around and ran a leg of the 4x400. Josh showed great guts. He is a leader on the team.

Santiago Lenz

Hermantown Quad (5/3/22) - Santi ran an awesome leg of the 4x800. He puked after his race and proceeded to run a great 800 and 4x400. He has been working hard all year and it is showing.

Kolbin Carter

Hermantown Quad (5/3/22) - Kolbin has been putting up great performances all year. In this meet he ran a 400 for the first time and ran great. He is willing to do whatever it takes to help the team.

Robert Laakso

Hermantown Quad (5/3/22) -Robert has been working hard and simply does the work. He leads in practice and leads at meets. He has been a great addition to the team this year.

Evan Bowen

Pine City Invite (4/29/22) - Evan ran the 800 for the first time and did a great job. His hamstrings started to hurt and he trusted the process and pulled himself from the 4x400. He knew that he wasn't 100% and he trusted his coaches and the process/training.

Luke Bettendorf

St. Francis Saints Invite (4/22/22) - Luke took a risk and really went out and competed in the 3200. He PRed and ran a great race. Luke was also a great leader throughout the day!

Elijah Wozniak

St. Francis Saints Invite (4/22/22) - Elijah had very tough day as far as events. He also had to step in and run a leg in the 4x400 and did a great job in all his events. Even PRing in the 1600. He was also a great leader during the day.

Kayden Rengo

St. Francis Saints Invite (4/22/22) - Kayden had a big day as far as events and he went out and just did the events without questions. Kayden was a great leader throughout the whole day exemplifying our value of Leadership.

Josh Knight

Pine City - (4/8/22) - Josh had a great day as far as his events. He was also a great leader during the meet.

Matt Harnell

Pine City - (4/8/22) - Matt had a huge day. He PR'ed in the Long Jump by three feet and made the All Time Top 10 list. He was one of the last people on the bus helping to clean the bus at the end of the meet.

Cam Pease

Pine City - (4/8/22) - Cam had a great day in cool weather and PR'ed in the 110H. Cam was also a great leader by cleaning the camp and the bus at the end of the meet.

2021 Spike Award Winners

Isaiah Manninen

     Sub Sections - 6/2/21 - Isaiah ran a fantastic 3200 and ran his fastest time of the season.  Isaiah spent the year getting faster all year.  He also cheered all year for his teammates and was a wonderful leader the whole year.  

Cameron Pease

     Denfeld Quad (5/25/21) - Cameron had two really big PR's in the hurdles and is getting better at them all the time.

Zak McPhee

      Denfeld Quad (5/25/21) - Zak has had a string of really big PR's in the throws over the last several meets.  

Matt Harnell

     Terry Nutter Classic (5/22/21) - Matt had three big PR's on a very hot day - 400, 200 and the Long Jump.

     Terry Nutter Classic (5/22/21) - Alex PR'ed in the 400 and the 800 and was competing in both races.  He has been getting faster in every meet.

Quinn Schnabel 

     Terry Nutter Classic (5/22/21) - Quinn had two PR's in the throws, both really nice throws.  

Owen Brenna

     LSC (5/11/21) - Owen had a nice PR in the shot and has been an excellent leader in the throws group.

John Werner 

     LSC (5/11/21) - John had a big day.  Ran a strong leg in the 4x400 and 4x800 and ran his fastest time of the year in the open 800.  He is getting faster everyday and has been working hard.

Zach Schnabel 

     LSC (5/11/21) - Zach PRed in the open 400 and ran a great leg in the 4x400.  He PRed in the Long Jump by a foot and placed second.  He earned All Conference honors in the Long Jump.  

Alex McPhee

      Cloquet Tri (5/7/21) - Alex had a monster day and PRed in all four of his events.  

Santiago Lenz

      Cloquet Tri (5/7/21) - Sanitago had a great day running the 4x800 and open 800.  He is having a great year for a freshmen.

Trevor Lindberg

      Cloquet Tri (5/7/21) - Trevor PRed in the open 100 and made the All Time 100m dash list with his time of 11.9.  

Kayden Rengo

      East Tri (5/4/21) - Kayden had three PR's and PRed in the Triple Jump by 8 feet.  Had a great meet!

Zach Schnabel

     East Tri (5/4/21) - Ran two great 400's.  PRed in the open 400

Kobey Manninen

     East Tri (5/4/21) - Kobey had a nice PR in the 400 and also PRed in the Triple Jump and went past his goal for the year in the Triple Jump.

Alex McPhee

     Proctor Invite (4/30/21) - Alex had a three PR day.  He PR'ed in the mile, the shot and the discus.  He had a big day.

Gabe Castleman

     Proctor Invite (4/30/21) - Gabe ran his first 400 in the 4x400 relay and had a fantastic finish.  A competitor tried to pass him on the backstretch and Gabe out raced him to seal the victory for the Rails.

Ben Johnson

     Proctor Invite (4/30/21) - Ben ran in the 800m and PR'ed by 11 seconds.  This is a HUGE PR in the 800m run.  Ben is getting better every day at practice. 

Nathanial Onken

     Proctor Dual (4/20/21) - Onken had three big PR's in a cold and overcast day.  This was the first meet for the Rails in over two years to PR after this long was quite the feat.

Josh Knight

     Proctor Dual (4/20/21) - Josh had an almost 10 second PR in the mile in cold conditions.  

Evan Bowen

     Proctor Dual (4/20/21) - Evan had a great day and PRed in the 400.

2019 Spike Award Winners

Carter Fuchs

     Pine City Invite (4/5/19) - Carter ran a great 800 and 4x4 leg in first meet.  He was also the one who made sure the camp and bus was clean.

Matt Bernard

      Pine City Invite (4/5/19) - Matt had a big PR in the mile and is in great shape for the start of the year.  

Jason Nelson

     Ashland Indoor (4/16/19) - It's Jason's first year in track and he had a great first meet

Caleb Mattison

     Ashland Indoor (4/16/19) - Caleb has returned to track this year and ran a great 4x4 anchor leg, catching several runners and running under 60 seconds.

Paul Ripley

     Ashland Indoor (4/16/19) - Paul was willing to take a spot in the 4x4 when someone got hurt.  He ran a really good leg and split.

Zach Schnabel

     Cambridge Invite (4/18/19) - Zach was the opening leg of the 4x4.  He ran in lane one by mistake but ran a REALLY good leg.  His effort and how much he cared was very evident in his run.

Braydon Rohweder 

     Cloquet Quad (4/23/19) - Braydon had a nice PR in the Discus and placed in the shot as well.

Thomas Walters

     Cloquet Quad (4/23/19) - Thomas went out really hard in the 3200 and trusted the coaches that this was going to help him in the long run.  It was a rough race for him and he still flirted with his PR.

Josh Knight

     Pine City Invite - (4/26/19) - Josh ran an excellent 1600 and PR'ed by a significant amount.  He ran great splits and ran a great strategic race.  

Kobey Manninen

     Matt Kero Invite - (4/10/19) - Kobey had a great meet in the TJ and PR'ed in the 400.  Kobey puts a lot of pressure on himself and had a great performance.

Evan Bowen

     Matt Kero Invite - (4/10/19) - Evan PR'ed in all of his events.  His anchor leg in the 4x4 was a BIG PR and showed a ton of guts.

Carter Fuchs

     Lake Superior Conference - (5/14/19) - Ran PR's in all his events and ran a great open 800.

Ricky Steel

     Lake Superior Conference - (5/14/19) - Ran a great anchor leg of the 4x200 putting the team into 3rd place.

Nolan Mehle

     Lake Superior Conference - (5/14/19) - Ran a strong anchor leg of the 4x400 and dropped his time for the year.

John Werner

  Lake Superior Conference - (5/14/19) - PR'ed in the open 800 and ran great legs of the 4x400 and 4x800.  Was All Conference in the open 800, finishing 2nd overall.

Braydon Rohweder

     South Sub Section - (4/23/19) - Braydon had a huge PR in the discus, 19 feet, to place him fourth overall and qualify him for Sections.

Gabe Castleman

      South Sub Section - (4/23/19) - Gabe ran a four second PR in the 300H and finished 3rd overall.  He was seeded in the slow heat.  Gabe qualified for Sections with his PR.  

2018 Spike Award Winners

Adam McRae:

     CSS Indoor Meet (3/23/18) - over a three foot PR in the Shot Put in the first meet.

Zach Coughlin:

     CSS Indoor Meet (3/23/18) - ran a 2:11 split in the opening leg of the 4x800m relay.  Opened the season with a strong performance for the team. 

Brayden Rohweder:

    Ashland Indoor Meet (4/14/18) - over a three foot PR in the Shot Put.  Three out of four throws were PR's during the meet.

Elias Lund:

     Ashland Indoor Meet (4/14/18) - Elias was a great example of team mate at this meet.  He held blocks, counted laps for the distance runners, organized people to hold blocks and cheered the whole meet.  

Alex McPHee:

     Hermantown Quad (4/24/18) - Alex ran the 1600, 800 and the 4x400 and ran great races in all of them.  He also PR'ed by four seconds in the mile.

Nolan Mehle:

      Hermantown Quad (4/24/18) - Nolan ran the open 400, the 200 and in the 4x400.  Noland PR'ed in the 400 by two seconds.  He also ran tough in his other races.

Nick Jauhola

      Hermantown Quad (4/24/18) - Nick had a big day running in three tough races, two of which he had never run before.  

Brody Eldien:

      Duluth East Invite (4/27/18) - Brody ran a great 800.  His last 250 m was very strong.

Isaiah Manninen

      Duluth East Invite (4/27/18) - Isiah ran a fantastic two mile in the cold weather.  He PR'ed by 14 seconds running a very good race. 

Brett Bower

      Superior Quad (5/2/18) - Brett has been willing to do whatever is needed to help the team.  He is not a huge fan of running 400's but is willing to run them and ran a great opening leg in the 4x400.

John Pioro

      Superior Quad (5/2/18) - John had a great long jump and PR'ed in the High Jump.  All on a sore hamstring.

Cody Hampton

      Superior Quad (5/2/18 - Cody PR'ed in both the 110 H and the 300 H.  His time in the 110 H placed him on the State Honor Roll by standard.  

Carter Fuchs

      Matt Kero Invite (5/11/18) - Carter ran three great races at the Kero Invite, PRing in all three races

Jimmy Bryant

      Matt Kero Invite (5/11/18) - Jimmy ran three quality races and PR'ed in two of them.  He also ran the 4x400 for the first time and ran a great split.

Cody Hampton

      LSC Meet (5/15/18) - Cody PR'ed in the 300H, ran a great anchor leg in the 4x200 and finished second to earn All Conference Honors in the 110H.

Conner St. Germaine

      LSC Meet (5/15/18) - Conner PR'ed in both of his events.  Finishing fourth in the Long Jump and second in the High Jump to earn All Conference Honors

Cody Hampton

     Terry Nutter Classic (5/19/18) - Cody won both the 110H and 300H.  He PRed in the 300H and set meet records in both the 110H and 300H.  He is on the State Honor Roll for both these races by standard.
